1st Team lose to last min goal - Harsh lesson for the youngsters
30 November 2008
Match report for Wilmslow Albion 1st Team 0 - 1 home defeat to Fives Athletic (29/11/2008)
On Sat, Albion 1st Team lost to a dubious last min goal. Albion started brightly with new boy Horton partnering Neary up front. Manager McGuire was ‘again’ forced to make several changes to the starting line up with the absence of several key players. Without: Raynes, Miggs, Byron, Fidel and captain Green, the line up once more was filled with youngsters.
Tony Chard (16) impressed early, with some sharp passing and link up play, whilst Ste Roberts showed effort and ability in the midfield. Albion created some good opportunities in the 1st half and should have been 2 goals up. Horton & Neary both missing the target. 0-0 H/T.
The second half was an end to end affair, with the visitors creating some good chances for themselves, Bowley again was in fine form in goal for the Albion.
The match looked certain to end a draw but with little time left on the clock, Fives broke away, a quick through ball found a striker standing 2 yards behind our defence, who slotted it pass Bowley. 0-1.
Albion deserved at least a point for the way the battled, and the chances created. And with the last effort of the game Chard sent a dipping shot inches past the post. But it was not to be, and the game ended 1-0 to Fives.
Manager McGuire said, “ I was proud of the effort the lads put in today, for the first time in a while I can see an improvement in both ability and determination. The influx of youngsters who know the game and can play good football has helped, and with time these boys could become a team to be reckoned with. The long term future is bright, but we must learn some harsh lessons, (like today’s game) along the way”.
